Elegida Loida García-Febo como Presidenta de ALA 2018–2019

CHICAGO – Loida Garcia-Febo, International Library Consultant and President of Information New Wave in Brooklyn, New York, has been elected president-elect of the American Library Association.
Garcia-Febo received 3,278 votes, while her opponents, Scott Walter, university librarian, DePaul University, Chicago, received 3,209 votes, and Terri Grief, School Librarian at McCracken County High School in Paducah, Kentucky, received 2,636 votes.
As ALA president, Garcia-Febo will be the chief elected officer for the oldest and largest library association in the world. She will serve as president-elect for one year before stepping into her role as president at the close of the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
Upon learning the outcome of the election, Garcia-Febo remarked;
“I am honored to serve as president-elect of the American Library Association. Together with ALA members, we will bring change to impact public policy, benefit our profession and our communities. ALA will be the leading voice advocating for libraries and library users while maintaining our core values, will have a place and a voice at the decision makers’ table, particularly for those in our communities with no voice and will amplify their concerns to Congress, at the state house, in city councils, and school boards, will build coalitions with like-minded partners sharing our values, will facilitate joint work among its units to promote diversity and equity in our profession and association, will train our members to flourish throughout our careers, to lead, serve and empower our libraries, patrons, and communities, and will advance our concerns through actions conveyed by pillars of ALA’s Strategic Plan: Advocacy, Information Policies, Professional and Leadership Development, and Diversity and Inclusion.”
An ALA member for 15 years, Garcia-Febo has served the library profession both domestically and internationally. Her organization, Information New Wave, is a non-profit organization seeking to bring access to information to underserved populations.
Garcia-Febo has served on the ALA Council from 2011-present and was elected to the ALA Executive Board 2015–18. In addition, she has held numerous committee appointments within ALA including the Committee on Diversity, Intellectual Freedom Committee, and Nominating Committee; she has chaired the Intellectual Freedom Round Table, the International Relations Committee, and the Committee on Membership meetings and is currently the chair-elect of the International Relations Round Table.
She is also very active in IFLA (the International Federation of Library Associations) and currently sits on their governing board, and REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking) where she served on the executive board from 2008-11, including president from 2009-10.
Garcia-Febo is the recipient of the 2015 REFORMA Elizabeth Martinez Lifetime Achievement Award. She was named a Notable Member on ALA’s International Relations Round Table, received the Elizabeth Futus Catalyst for Change Award in 2010 and was named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker Freedom Fighter in 2007. She was also awarded an ALA/IFLA Fellowship for the 2004 IFLA Congress where she co-established the IFLA New Professionals.
Garcia-Febo holds both a BA in Business Education and MLS from the University of Puerto Rico.

CHICAGO – Loida García-Febo, Asesora internacional de bibliotecología y presidenta de International Information New Wave en Brooklyn, Nueva York, fue elegida para la presidencia de la Asociación de Bibliotecas de los Estados Unidos.
García-Febo recibió 3,278 votos, mientras que sus oponentes, Scott Walter, bibliotecario de la Universidad DePaul de Chicago, recibió 3,209; y Terri Grief, bibliotecaria de la Escuela Secundaria del Condado McCracken en Paducah, Kentucky, recibió 2,636 votos.
En el desempeño de su cargo de presidenta de ALA, García-Febo será la funcionaria electa principal de la asociación de bibliotecas más antigua y mayor del mundo. Ocupará la presidencia durante un año, hasta la clausura de la Conferencia Anual ALA 2018 que se llevará a cabo en Nueva Orleans.
Al conocer los resultados de la elección, García-Febo declaró:
“Me honra servir como presidenta electa de la Asociación de Bibliotecas de los Estados Unidos. Conjuntamente con los miembros de ALA, realizaremos cambios para ejercer un impacto en la política pública, y beneficiar nuestra profesión y nuestras comunidades. ALA será la voz principal que abogue por las bibliotecas y los usuarios de las mismas, mientras que, manteniendo al mismo tiempo nuestros valores centrales, tendremos lugar y voz en la mesa de los que toman decisiones, particularmente para aquellos miembros de nuestras comunidades que no tienen voz, y elevaremos nuestras preocupaciones al Congreso, a la cámara estatal, en los concejos de ciudad, y en las juntas escolares, crearemos coaliciones con colaboradores de pensamientos afines que comparten nuestros valores, facilitaremos trabajo conjunto entre sus unidades para promover la diversidad e igualdad en nuestra profesión y asociación, entrenaremos a nuestros miembros para prosperar en nuestras carreras, serviremos y empoderaremos a nuestras bibliotecas, clientes y comunidades, y haremos públicas nuestras preocupaciones con acciones propugnadas por los pilares del Plan Estratégico de ALA: Promoción, Políticas de información, Desarrollo profesional y de liderazgo, y Diversidad e inclusión”.
García-Febo, miembro de ALA desde hace quince años, ha desempeñado la profesión de bibliotecología en el ámbito nacional e internacional. Su organización, Information New Wave, es una institución sin fines de lucro cuyo objetivo es dar acceso a la información a poblaciones necesitadas.
García-Febo es miembro del Consejo de ALA desde el 2011, y fue elegida para formar parte de la Junta Ejecutiva de ALA del 2015 al 2018. Además, ha ocupado numerosos cargos en varios comités de ALA, como los de Diversidad, Libertad Intelectual, y de Nominación. Además, dirigió la Mesa Redonda de Libertad Intelectual, así como reuniones del Comité de Relaciones Internacionales, y el Comité de Membresía. En la actualidad es presidenta electa de la junta directiva de la Mesa Redonda de Relaciones Internacionales.
Asimismo, participa activamente en IFLA (the International Federation of Library Associations) y actualmente forma parte de su junta de gobernación, y de REFORMA (The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking) donde fue miembro de la junta ejecutiva del 2008 al 2011, y su presidenta del 2009-2010.
García-Febo ha sido distinguida con el Premio Elizabeth Martínez a la Trayectoria Destacada de REFORMA en el 2015. Además, fue elegida Miembro Notable de la Mesa Redonda de Relaciones Internacionales de ALA, se le otorgó el premio Elizabeth Futus Catalyst for Change Award en el 2010 y fue distinguida como Library Journal Mover & Shaker Freedom Fighter en el 2007. También se le otorgó el ALA/IFLA Fellowship en el Congreso IFLA 2004, donde fue co-fundadora de IFLA New Professionals.
García-Febo es Licenciada en Educación de Negocios y obtuvo su MLS en la Universidad de Puerto Rico.
